Buried at the bottom of the Steam Machine’s official FAQ page, Valve dropped something bigger than the console itself. “With the newly-released SteamOS 3.8, you can run the same code and operating system as Steam Machine on your own living-room PC using whatever PC parts you want.”
That’s not a workaround someone found. That’s Valve’s official blessing. As of SteamOS 3.8, released June 22, you can install the exact same operating system running on the $1,049 Steam Machine onto your own hardware, for free, provided you meet one condition.
You need an AMD GPU. That’s the entire catch.
Why You Need AMD to Build Your Own Steam Machine
Nvidia isn’t supported, and won’t be for a while. The reason comes down to driver architecture, not Valve playing favourites.
AMD’s Linux drivers the open-source RADV implementation are fully open, and Valve has contractors actively working on improving them. Nvidia’s high level graphics software remains closed-source. Valve coder Pierre-Loup Griffais confirmed to The Verge that the company is actively collaborating with Nvidia on GeForce support, but cautioned it “might not be this year.” Most realistic estimates put official Nvidia support at late 2026 at the earliest, with 2027 considered more likely.
If you’re running an Nvidia card today, your options are: wait, swap to an AMD GPU for this build specifically, or run Bazzite a community Linux distribution that maintains unofficial Nvidia support and a SteamOS-style interface, at the cost of giving up Valve’s official backing and polish.
For AMD owners, the path is open right now.
What You Actually Need



The official requirements per Valve’s SteamOS 3.8 support documentation:
A discrete AMD GPU. RX 6000 series (RDNA 2, the same architecture as the Steam Deck) and RX 7000 series (RDNA 3, the same architecture as the Steam Machine) give the best-tested results. RDNA 4 the RX 9060 XT and RX 9070 series is also supported through the Linux 6.16 kernel and Mesa 26.1.2 shipped in this release.
A UEFI-compatible motherboard. Not strictly mandatory but strongly recommended legacy BIOS installs are possible via a separate ISO but add complexity you don’t need.
Secure Boot disabled, CSM disabled in BIOS. This is a hard requirement, not optional. It’s also part of why SteamOS can’t run games with kernel-level anti-cheat more on that below.
At least 64GB of storage minimum, though Valve recommends 200GB or more for a usable game library. A dedicated SSD or NVMe drive is strongly advised. If you’re dual-booting with Windows, install SteamOS on a completely separate physical drive Valve’s own engineers have warned against sharing a drive between the two in SteamOS’s current state.

A USB drive of at least 16GB to create the installer.
A standard AMD or Intel CPU. The GPU is the constraint, not the processor.


How to Actually Install It
This is a real install process, not a five-minute download. Set aside an evening.
Step 1 — Download the installer. Go to Valve’s official SteamOS recovery page at help.steampowered.com (search “SteamOS recovery” if the direct link has changed) and download the desktop installer image. It comes as a compressed file extract it before proceeding.
Step 2 — Create the bootable USB. Use Rufus (Windows) or a similar USB imaging tool to flash the extracted image onto your USB drive. This will erase whatever is currently on that USB drive.
Step 3 — Disable Secure Boot and CSM in BIOS. Restart your PC, enter BIOS setup, and turn off Secure Boot and Compatibility Support Module. Save and exit.
Step 4 — Boot from the USB. Set your USB drive as the boot priority, or use your motherboard’s boot menu (usually F11 or F12 on startup) to boot directly from it.
Step 5 — Choose Automatic or Expert install. Automatic erases the entire target drive and installs SteamOS as the only OS — the simplest path if this is a dedicated SteamOS machine. Expert mode lets you control partition sizes and set up dual-boot with Windows, but requires more care and a separate EFI partition consideration.
Step 6 — Let it run. The installer takes time to load real-world reports put initial desktop load at 10–15 minutes, which feels alarming but is normal. If the desktop hasn’t appeared after 20 minutes, that’s a genuine sign of a hardware compatibility issue, and it’s safe to power off and reassess rather than keep waiting.
Step 7 — Confirm and wipe. Once you reach the SteamOS installer desktop, double-click “Wipe and Reinstall SteamOS” (the exact label may vary slightly by version) and confirm. This is the point of no return for the target drive make sure any data you care about is backed up elsewhere first.
Step 8 — Reboot, update, and log in. After installation completes, reboot, sign into your Steam account, and immediately check for updates in Settings → System before doing anything else. SteamOS moves fast right now and you want the latest patches from day one.
What Works and What Doesn’t
This is the section that matters most before you commit a build to this.
Game compatibility through Proton covers most of the Steam library. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer has matured enormously, and the majority of Windows-only titles run without issue.
Kernel-level anti-cheat games don’t work, and won’t. Secure Boot has to be disabled for SteamOS to function, and many modern anti-cheat systems specifically require Secure Boot to be active as part of their security model. Valorant, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and EA Sports titles fall into this category and remain unplayable regardless of what hardware you throw at it. Check your specific game library against ProtonDB before committing to this as your primary gaming setup.
Some peripherals need troubleshooting. Real-world installs have flagged USB Bluetooth dongles not being detected reliably a motherboard with built-in Bluetooth is the safer bet than relying on an external adapter. Audio routing, HDMI channel detection, and Bluetooth headset mic support were all specifically improved in 3.8, but it’s still Linux expect the occasional rough edge that wouldn’t exist on Windows.
Console-like features are inconsistent on DIY builds. Users running their own SteamOS desktops have reported that resume from-sleep works but can feel sluggish compared to the official Steam Machine experience, which Valve has tuned specifically for its own hardware. Don’t expect a 1:1 match to the polish of buying the actual Steam Machine you’re trading some of that refinement for the freedom to pick your own parts and save money.
This is officially in beta. Valve’s own support documentation lists custom AMD desktop installs as beta status, distinct from the “Powered by SteamOS” certified status given to the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Lenovo Legion Go S. Expect rough edges that get smoothed out over future updates, not a finished product on day one.
Why Build This Instead of Buying the Steam Machine
The Steam Machine costs $1,049 for the 512GB model. It comes with a fixed semi-custom RDNA 3 GPU, 16GB DDR5, and a 512GB or 2TB SSD no upgrade path, no component choice.
Build your own SteamOS machine and every part is your decision. Pair an RX 9060 XT 16GB with a Ryzen 5 9600X and you’ve got significantly more GPU performance than the Steam Machine’s semi-custom silicon, for a build that costs roughly the same money as our Best GPU 2026 pricing data shows. Want more storage? Add a 2TB NVMe drive for less than what Valve charges for the storage upgrade alone. Want better cooling, a nicer case, more RGB? It’s your build.
The trade-off is exactly what you’d expect from any DIY project versus a finished console: more setup time, more troubleshooting risk, and a beta-status software experience rather than Valve’s fully polished, certified hardware pairing. If you want zero friction and you’re fine with the fixed spec, buy the Steam Machine. If you already have AMD GPU components or you want to build a couch gaming PC on your own terms, this is now a legitimate, officially-sanctioned path that didn’t exist before June 22.
