The PSU is the component most first-time builders spend the least time thinking about. It’s also the one most capable of damaging everything else in the build when it fails badly. A cheap no-name PSU doesn’t just stop working — it can fail with a voltage spike that takes the GPU, motherboard, and CPU with it.
This isn’t theoretical. It happens. The tier list below is based on the community-maintained Cultists Network PSU tier list methodology — real testing of voltage regulation, ripple suppression, protection circuits, and build quality across hundreds of units — combined with verified current availability on Newegg.
Tier 1 — Buy Without Hesitation
These are the units with proven reliability, strong protection circuits, and consistent real-world performance.
Seasonic sits at the top of every serious PSU evaluation for a reason. Their FOCUS and Prime lines are manufactured in-house with tight quality control. The Prime TX and GX lines are fully modular, gold or titanium efficiency, and built to last well past their warranty period. If budget allows, Seasonic is the default recommendation. be quiet! Dark Power units are the serious enthusiast pick from a brand that doesn’t compromise on build quality. The Dark Power 13 series is fully modular, uses industrial-grade capacitors, and runs quietly — relevant if your build is in a listening environment.be quiet! Dark Power 13 850W ($189)

Corsair HX and HX Platinum series. Corsair’s budget and mid-range lines are inconsistent — some are excellent, some are outsourced and mediocre. The HX series specifically is not. Fully modular, 80 Plus Platinum, ten-year warranty. The HX1000i is on Newegg and worth the price for a high-wattage build. Corsair HX1000i ($244)

Tier 2 — Reliable With Caveats
Good PSUs from reputable brands. Not Tier 1 quality, but genuinely safe choices for most builds.
Corsair RMx series. The RM and RMx lines are the sweet spot for most mid-range builds. Fully modular, gold efficiency, decent ripple suppression. The RMx is the version worth buying over the RM. Corsair RMx 850 ($289)

EVGA SuperNOVA G6 and G7. EVGA exited the GPU market but continues to make PSUs, and the SuperNOVA G-series remains a solid choice. Fully modular, gold efficiency, strong protection circuits.
Gigabyte UD series (not the GP series). The UD-branded units from Gigabyte use Seasonic platform components and are genuinely good. The GP-branded budget units are a different story — avoid those.
ASUS ROG Thor for enthusiast wattage builds. Expensive, but the build quality justifies it for a flagship system.
Tier 3 — Acceptable for Budget Builds
These units work and won’t destroy your hardware under normal conditions, but they cut corners on capacitor quality and build tolerances. Fine for a budget build. Not recommended for anything housing an RTX 5070 Ti or higher.
Corsair CX and CX-F RGB series. The CX line is not in the same category as the RM or HX lines. Non-modular, budget capacitors, rated protection circuits that have been shown to be slightly generous in third-party testing. Fine for a $600 build. Not for a $1,500+ build.
Thermaltake Smart and Smart Pro series. Functional but not impressive. Avoid the non-Pro variants.
Tier 4 — Avoid
Do not buy these. They present a real risk to connected hardware.

Generic and unbranded ARGB PSUs sold on Amazon and AliExpress. No brand name, inflated wattage ratings, absent protection circuits. The 800W unit that costs $45 is not an 800W unit. Never buy an unbranded PSU.
Apevia, Raidmax, and Logisys. Budget brands with poor reliability records and weak protection circuits. Widely documented failures. Avoid regardless of sale price.
Rosewill Photon (older units). Previously decent, now replaced by better options at similar prices. Not dangerous but not a competitive choice.
How to Size Your PSU Correctly
Use the SpecClear PSU Calculator at specclear.com/psu-calculator/ for your specific build. As a general rule: add the TDP of your CPU and GPU, then add 20% headroom. An RTX 5070 Ti at 300W paired with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D at 120W totals 420W — a 650W PSU is the floor, an 850W unit gives comfortable headroom and keeps the unit operating at 50-60% load where efficiency and longevity are optimal.
Don’t buy more wattage than you need. A 1600W PSU in a 500W system isn’t safer — it just wastes money and runs at a less efficient load percentage.
One wattage rule worth knowing: PSUs run most efficiently and last longest at 50-60% of rated load. Sizing to hit that range under your typical workload extends the unit’s lifespan beyond the warranty period.
