AMD FSR 4.1 Is Now on Your RX 7000 GPU Here’s What Changed and How to Enable It

If you own an RX 7600, RX 7700 XT, RX 7800 XT, RX 7900 XT or RX 7900 XTX, update your drivers today. AMD dropped FSR 4.1 support for every RDNA 3 desktop GPU on June 22, 2026 — a month earlier than the July window they’d originally announced — and it’s a free performance upgrade that requires no new hardware.

This is the upscaler that’s been sitting behind the RX 9000 series paywall since early 2025. RX 7000 owners have been watching it happen from the sidelines for over a year. Now it’s yours.

Here’s exactly what it is, what it actually does to your frame rates, and how to turn it on in three steps.


Why AMD FSR 4.1 Took So Long to Reach RX 7000 Cards

FSR 4.1 isn’t just a software toggle it’s a machine learning model that runs on dedicated AI accelerator hardware. RDNA 4 chips (the RX 9000 series) have second-generation matrix accelerators that process the upscaling model in FP8, which is 8-bit floating-point arithmetic. It’s the hardware that makes the whole thing tick at full efficiency.

RDNA 3 doesn’t have FP8 capability. It has INT8 8-bit integer processing which is different enough that AMD couldn’t simply port the existing model across. A direct conversion from FP8 to INT8 introduces visual artifacts because the two formats handle numerical range differently. AMD had to fully retrain and requantize the upscaling model from scratch so its weights and activations work correctly under INT8 constraints without producing ghosting or sharpness errors.

That engineering work is why this took over a year. It wasn’t AMD sitting on a finished product it was a genuinely different implementation that required its own development cycle.

The practical result: RDNA 3’s FSR 4.1 runs on INT8 and carries a small performance overhead compared to RDNA 4. Expect roughly 8–10% lower efficiency than an equivalent RX 9000 card running the same algorithm. That’s the honest technical trade-off. Against what you had before FSR 3.1 it’s still a significant step up.


What the Numbers Actually Look Like

AMD’s own demo showed an RX 7900 XTX going from 43fps to 64fps in Crimson Desert at native 4K versus FSR 4.1 enabled. That’s nearly a 50% frame rate gain. The company also cites a 49% uplift versus native rendering across its benchmark suite.

Take those figures as a ceiling, not a guarantee. That’s AMD’s internal demo, a single title, at a resolution and quality preset they chose. Real-world results across a varied game library at different settings will differ. Independent reviewers haven’t published full benchmark suites yet as of this article that testing is still incoming. When those benchmarks land, the actual picture across a spread of titles will be clearer.

What is confirmed: FSR 4.1 on RDNA 3 beats the community workarounds that have been circulating. Tools like Optiscaler were already force-injecting an unofficial INT8 build reverse-engineered from leaked AMD code. AMD’s official driver runs the upscaler around 3–5fps faster than those community builds in tested titles. If you were already running Optiscaler, update to the official driver and uninstall the mod.

One limitation worth knowing: frame generation stays on FSR 3.1 for RX 7000 cards. FSR 4.1 brings the improved image reconstruction the upscaling quality itself but the frame synthesis component that generates additional frames between rendered ones remains exclusive to RDNA 4 hardware. You’re getting a better-looking upscaler. You’re not getting RDNA 4-level frame generation.


How to Enable FSR 4.1 on Your RX 7000 GPU

Three steps.

Step 1 — Update your drivers. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Check for updates. You need version 26.6.2 or later. If you haven’t updated recently, it’ll be there. Download and install.

Step 2 — Enable FSR upscaling in Adrenalin. Open AMD Software after the driver install. Go to Gaming → Graphics. Find the AMD FSR Upscaling toggle and enable it. This sets FSR 4.1 as the default upscaler for supported games you don’t need to configure it per-title unless you want to override the preset.

Step 3 — Enable it in-game. In any of the 300+ supported titles, go to the graphics/display settings. Look for AMD FSR Upscaling. Select your quality preset Quality mode is the sensible starting point for most 1440p and 4K use. Performance mode pushes frame rates harder at the cost of image clarity. Ultra Quality is the conservative option if you want maximum visual fidelity with minimal upscaling artefacts.

If you want to verify it’s running FSR 4.1 rather than an older version, enable the in-game overlay watermark in Adrenalin. It’ll show the FSR version actively running.

One known issue: the 26.6.2 driver has a bug on Windows 10 where the GPU may not be recognised after install, showing a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. AMD is aware of it. If you’re on Windows 10, wait for the follow-up driver patch before updating. Windows 11 users are unaffected.


Which RX 7000 Cards This Covers

Every desktop RDNA 3 GPU. That means the full RX 7600 through RX 7900 XTX lineup if it’s a desktop card with an RX 7000 series number, FSR 4.1 is available on it today via driver 26.6.2.

RDNA 3.5 desktop cards are also covered. That includes the RX 7600 XT and RX 7700 series variants built on the refined RDNA 3.5 die.

What’s not covered yet: RDNA 3 APUs the integrated graphics in Ryzen 7000 and 8000-series mobile and desktop chips are getting a separate lightweight machine learning model because the standard INT8 model is too demanding for integrated graphics compute budgets. No release window confirmed, but AMD has confirmed it’s in development. RDNA 2 cards — the RX 6000 series — are scheduled for early 2027.

There’s also a Steam Machine connection worth noting. The Steam Machine runs a semi-custom RDNA 3 GPU, which means it gets FSR 4.1 from day one. Valve already pushed an FSR 4.1 INT8 file through Proton Experimental around the same time AMD released the driver, suggesting the two companies coordinated the rollout.


Does This Change Whether You Should Buy an RX 7000 Card?

Somewhat. FSR 4 exclusivity had been one of the arguments for jumping to the RX 9000 series over buying a used RX 7900 XTX or RX 7800 XT at a discount. That argument is weaker now.

The honest position: RX 9000 hardware still runs FSR 4.1 better the FP8 native implementation is more efficient than INT8, and frame generation is exclusive to RDNA 4. If you’re buying new today, the RX 9060 XT 16GB is still the smarter purchase over an RX 7600 for future-proofing reasons. But a used RX 7800 XT at a meaningful discount just got more attractive, and RX 7900 XTX owners who were considering an upgrade for the upscaling alone now have a clear reason to stay put.
