Buy a clean used last-gen card when new midrange is 20–50% over MSRP. Skip used current-gen and anything priced within ~15% of new.
Last verified: September 12, 2026. New RTX 5060 street still clusters roughly mid-$300s to ~$450 depending on the day. RX 9060 XT 16GB sits near ~$460–$470. Plenty of 5070 Ti listings still ask over $1,000. In that market a used RX 6800 XT, RTX 3080, or RTX 4070 can beat new 8GB midrange on frames-per-dollar if you buy sold-band prices and test the card.
The used market isn’t a consolation prize right now. It’s where pre-shortage VRAM and older silicon undercut AI-inflated kits. See also GPU prices in 2026 and the AMD GPU price hike notes.
Why used makes more sense in 2026 than in 2023
In 2022–2023 used prices were still sticky from mining demand, so the gap to new was small and warranty mattered more. That flipped. Current-gen kits carry the DRAM/AI premium. Last-gen boards (RTX 30, RX 6000, early Ada/RDNA3) were built before that squeeze and now trade without the same supply tax.
VRAM is the practical wedge. A new RTX 5060 near ~$450 is still 8GB GDDR7. A used RX 6800 XT around the low-to-mid $300s is 16GB GDDR6. At 1440p high settings, hitting the VRAM ceiling hurts more than losing a bit of raw throughput.
Cards worth buying, by budget
Under $200: RX 6600 XT (~$130–$160 used)
1080p high-to-ultra workhorse. About 160W, easy on budget PSUs. 8GB is fine at 1080p; it gets tight at 1440p. If you can stretch toward ~$220–$280, a used RTX 3070 is the better 1440p buy. Don’t buy RTX 3060 8GB here. Prefer 3060 12GB or the 6600 XT.
$200–$350: RTX 3070 (~$220–$300) or RX 6800 XT (~$320–$360)

RTX 3070: solid 1440p, DLSS 2, NVENC. 8GB is the limit in the heaviest 1440p maxed titles.
RX 6800 XT: trades blows with a 3080 in raster, 16GB headroom, no DLSS (FSR instead), weaker ray tracing.
Same-day price them. Take the 6800 XT when VRAM-heavy raster matters. Take the 3070 when Nvidia features matter more than the 16GB stick.
$300–$450: RTX 3080 10GB (~$300–$380 fair sold)

Serious 1440p card with strong ray tracing and DLSS 2. 10GB is fine at 1440p for a few more years; 4K ultra is where overflow shows. 12GB 3080s in the upper band can be worth it for 4K ambitions.
Buy rule: clean non-miner near sold comps under ~$380 for 10GB. Asks at $450+ are too close to used 4070 money.
$450–$550: RTX 4070 (~$450–$550) or RX 7900 GRE (check sold that day)

RTX 4070: Ada efficiency (about 200W versus the 3080’s about 320W), DLSS 4 via driver, strong 1440p and moderate 4K.
RX 7900 GRE: 16GB, often ahead in pure raster; FSR path; weaker ray tracing. Asking prices wander, so use sold listings, not hopeful asks.
This tier is used current-ish hardware without paying today’s crisis premium on new midrange. For the new midrange trap, see RTX 5060 vs RX 9060 XT.
What not to buy

- RTX 3090 for gaming: 24GB and thirsty. At $700+ used, a new RX 9070-class card is usually the saner gaming spend. The 3090 still makes sense for local AI that needs 24GB.
- RTX 3060 8GB: uncomfortable at 1440p; 6600 XT or 3060 12GB are better uses of the money.
- Anything within ~15% of new: a used RTX 4060 Ti 8GB saving $50 isn’t worth unknown hours and no warranty. Used value shows up around 30%+ under new.
- Used RTX 5060 / RX 9060 XT: current-gen used rarely undercuts new enough to justify the risk.
How to buy used GPUs without getting burned

Mining history matters less than it did. Dust, bad paste, bent coolers, and bad VRAM matter more. More detail: GPU temperature guide and how to stress test a PC.
- Prefer eBay buyer protection over unprotected Marketplace cash.
- Run OCCT VRAM for 10+ minutes before you commit (or buy with returns). Artefacts mean walk away.
- Stress 15–20 minutes (FurMark / Time Spy). Watch HWiNFO. Sustained die temps over ~85°C with stock cooling means paste or fans; discount the offer.
- Confirm the SKU in GPU-Z before money moves. Rebadges still exist.
Hard limit: if the seller blocks a VRAM test and offers no return path, don’t buy.
Use eBay protection when you can. If you’re buying on a naked marketplace, insist on testing the parts before you pay. It normally only takes a few minutes to confirm everything’s working. A lot of scammers and people dumping defective cards will refuse a test. You’re the buyer. You control the sale.
Current sweet spots (September 12, 2026)
- RX 6800 XT ~$320–$360: 16GB 1440p raster king in this price war.
- RTX 3080 10GB ~$300–$380 sold: best DLSS used card in-band when clean.
- RTX 4070 ~$450–$550: Ada efficiency and DLSS 4 without the new-kit tax.
New midrange still wins when you need warranty, quiet OEM coolers, or features you won’t get on last-gen. Otherwise buy used on sold comps, test hard, and spend the difference on PSU or case airflow.
